Navigating The Temperature Landscape: A Comprehensive Guide To Digital, Infrared, And Galinstan Thermometers

There are many areas in the industry where precise temperature readings are essential. Deviations of less than one degree can have devastating consequences! It’s good that the digital thermometer reliably displays the correct temperature and is, therefore, suitable for use in various areas. Whether in the catering trade or in the production and processing of food, whether for monitoring cold chains or checking the function of air conditioning systems, a digital thermometer has become indispensable.
The following features characterize many high-quality digital thermometers:
- Robust and handy design
- Exact sensor technology and precise measurement results
- Clear presentation of values thanks to large display
- Different probes can be used for other areas of application
Digital Thermometer Types
Today, a digital thermometer is used wherever temperature measurements are required, whereby various types of thermometers are conceivable:
- Infrared thermometers (measurement from a distance)
- Surface thermometers (equipped with fixed or interchangeable probes)
- Air thermometers insertion thermometers (for preparing food, for example)
- Digital thermometers like these
These are just a tiny selection because digital thermometers are used wherever temperatures and their compliance are essential. Other measuring devices cannot replace them but are often used in combination with them. In this case, temperatures and humidity values are measured simultaneously.
Three Most Common Types Of Thermometers
There used to be a mercury thermometer for measuring fever. Since 2009, however, the sale of this type of thermometer has been banned, as, for example, Italy implemented by ministerial decree the European directive that assessed mercury thermometers as dangerous to humans and the environment.
Today, commercially available thermometers are of 3 types: digital, infrared, and Galinstan. But which thermometer is best to choose? Here is everything you need to know about the diverse world of thermometers.
Digital Thermometer
The digital thermometer is very simple to use: it is turned on with a button, placed under the armpit, in the mouth or rectum, and produces a sound the moment the temperature has been measured. The precise figure will be viewable on a small display located on the front of the thermometer. It will turn itself off.
Most digital thermometers have an accuracy of ± 0.1°C. According to this digital system, average oral temperature is between 35.7 ° C and 37.3 ° C, rectal temperature is between 36.2 ° C and 37.7 ° C, and underarm temperature ranges from 35.2 ° C to 36.7 ° C.
Infrared Thermometer
Infrared thermometers are recommended for both adults and children. Bring them close to the forehead or insert them into the ear, and without creating any kind of disturbance, they measure the temperature in very few seconds (which is why many mothers choose them for their little ones). This type of instrument is also called a frontal thermometer.
For example, the measurement may not be accurate in case of a sweaty or wet forehead, so it is always better to use this kind of thermometer while observing proper precautions. Again, temperature data appear on a display.
Galinstan Thermometer
This type is the “official replacement” for the mercury thermometer. Very similar in appearance and also in operation, it ensures accurate measurement but takes longer than the previously described thermometers (about 5 minutes).
Instead of the banned mercury, there are Gallium, Indium, and Tin, which create a thermosensitive fluid compound.
Many thermometers of this type are mercury-free, environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and anti-allergenic. Equipped with an “easy flip” system that facilitates the metal’s descent, they are presented as thermometers that are accurate in measurement, can be used axillary, oral, and rectal, and are suitable for the whole family.
